Sonatas for Viola and Piano: „Romantic Viola Sonatas“

Time and again, the interplay of viola and piano is a joy for the ear, and musicians Hiyoli Togawa (viola) and Lilit Grigoryan (piano) have used precisely these two instruments to record an extraordinary programme on CD.

The recorded repertoire includes works, such as the Nocturnes op. 186, written by Czech-German composer Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda (1801–1866), the Cello Sonata in F Major op. 16 No. 1 (for viola and piano) by French composer George Onslow (1784–1853) and Felix Mendelssohn’s (1809–1847) Sonata for Viola and Piano in C Minor MWV Q14, which was unpublished during his lifetime.

The production of this album was made possible thanks to the Funk Foundation. The project was also carried out in partnership with the label Naxos. The finished CD has been commercially available since January 2018.

To mark the release of the CD, Hiyoli Togawa and Lilit Grigoryan also performed live as a duo on 13 January 2018 as part of the 64th Chamber Music Week at Schloss Elmau, Germany.
